After a visit to the famous Hot Springs in Glenwood I was mighty hungry and my companion and I stopped in at Tequila’s. He was a huge fan and a regular at this cozy spot nestled at the bottom of the mountains.
My first impression of this family run restaurant was the relaxing ambiance. The decor was a bit dated and the dining room could use some freshening up. I was here for the food and food I got!
Just a few minutes after being seated we were brought fresh tomato salsa and hot corm chips. Next came an in -house cabbage slaw. The salsa was fresh and delicately seasoned with cilantro- some places over use cilantro which drowns out the other flavors. At Tequila’s they used it perfectly – Ask for lots of napkins!the salsa is runny but well worth the occasional spill on the jeans. We had margaritas as we perused the menu.. Served in a tall glass filled with ice they were a perfect match for the chips and salsa. We ordered the house specialty appetizer- Mexican flavored mushrooms- sauteed to perfection and an enormous portion-
The menu is extensive and based on what I saw being brought to other patrons the portions were huge. The whole gamut of Mexican food is available and the choices were wide and varied. I chose the chicken fajitas that arrived with your choice of corn or flour tortillas- I found them a bit too small to put very much filling into. The fajitas came with a huge portion of peppers and onions and well seasoned chicken breast, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream and cheddar cheese- It also is served with a portion of Mexican rive and bean puree- I passed on the extras as i was focused on eating the fajitas. A bargain at $13.00.
My companion ordered the double platter that arrived with enough food for two- His platter was the chile reillnos and chicken enchilada-The reillonos was well seasoned and perfectly crispy- served with a pork green chile sauce. The chicken enchilada was smothered in red Colorado sauce and it too was delicious. Unbelievably the double platter was only $9.00.
The service is fast and friendly and they bring complimentary refills of slaw, salsa and chips. You can sense the managers presence and he pride that is placed in operating this efficient and colorful restaurant. The food arrives quickly and is the essence of freshness and quality. The value is incomparable and I would recommend anyone in the area visit this Mexican gem hidden in the Colorado Rockies.
